Representation of Ethnic Minorities in Media

Representation of Ethnic Minorities in Media  5/27/18 I don't watch that much entertainment media, but whenever I do, notice that most of the people portrayed on entertainment media are typical of the same ethnicity. Most of which tend to be Caucasian. Furthermore, its difficult to find movies or television shows where the protagonist is Asian, African American, or any other minority race. To begin, I believe that minority representation within media has gradually gotten better since the last couple of years. However, it's still evident that there is an imbalance between representation. Furthermore, it is difficult to realize that your ethnicity may not be portrayed as much or is as popular as others. As a result, it is a little demotivating at the time. Although, things are getting better. For example, Black Panther. Black Panther was a great movie and I'm not going to give any spoilers for those who haven't watched it, despite it being forever since it

Miss Representation

Miss Representation 5/27/18 Overall, this video serves as an eye-opener to some of the struggles women go through. There were many topics that were covered within the video such as, women being underrepresented within media and politics, the sexualization and portrayed vulgarity of women through entertainment media, and the expectations of women. To begin, it's difficult to find a movie or film with a woman protagonist. One of which isn't portrayed as inhuman, one-dimensional, or heavily reliant on others. I realize there are Disney movies with female protagonists, however, the protagonists are usually dependent on others or their prince. As a result, this ultimately demotivates women. Honestly, if I were to see my ethnicity portrayed in a film and they were either portrayed as the bad guys or heavily stereotypical, then I would be demotivated also.  Another thing is the over-sexualization of women within commercials such as popular beer brands. In which the

The Teen Market

The Teen Market 5/19/18 https://www.inc.com/issie-lapowsky/inside-massive-tech-land-grab-teenagers.html       To begin, I will be focusing on the teen market and why it is important. Overall, the teen market is one of the largest markets with the most potential;. in which is constituted of mostly millennials. Furthermore, teens show high demand for new products depending on which product's popularity. The teen market is an ever-growing market that fluctuates in its needs. As the teen market usually constitutes was is popular or what is in demand.  For example, I will bring up technology, an ever-growing industry. In the teenager's perspective, whom grew up in the age of technology find it easier to adapt. Furthermore, teens are adept at finding products that are catered their needs. As a result, their views aren't always affected by that of older generations and therefore, teens control the demand for certain products.  Also, the teen market has one

Making Cents Out of Teens

Making Cents Out of Teens 5/19/18  Upon watching PBS Frontline’s “Making Cents out of Teens,” it didn't really surprise me. I know that companies make lots of assumptions about teens, most of them beginning with, "All teens want or need this". On the other hand, I realize that companies try to project their own image of the "ideal" teenager based on focus groups and interviews. Overall, I would just be talking about the disadvantages of their advertising techniques and I am just going to give my two cents on the issue. To begin, the advertisers within the film generally made the assumption that most teens are attracted to sex, violence, and excitement. As a result, advertisers cater to their audience's needs. To the point in which products or shows become overly vulgar or fan-service orientated. This just has a chain effect as more and more products revolve around this assumption. Secondly, the entire projection of a mook or midriff seems

My Improving Relationship With Media

My Improving Relationship With Media 5/13/18     I'm 16 years old, I have a lot of homework, and I'm human, which means that sometimes I resort to any kind of media as a destresser. Although, I realize that I can become too enveloped within media, often spending too much time on it or letting it have too much of a influence on me. Overall, we all go through these problems but the key solution is to realize them and working to resolve such issues.     I will be honest, I go on the phone during class, especially during science with Mrs. Watkins. I tend to use it as an escape, primarily because the material within class might be unappealing or boring. However, this is creating a hindrance for me in many ways. Not only am I making myself vulnerable to getting caught and having my phone taken away but I'm also depriving myself of the information taught. As a result, I would be clueless about the material and when I'm frustrated because I can't find an answ

Childish Gambino-This is America

Childish Gambino-This is America 5/13/18       To Begin, Donald Glover an American singer, actor, and comedian comments on gun violence and other social issues within society through his new song-This is America. The song was published on May 5, 2018, and was followed by large controversy. Within the video, Donald Glover explicitly shows the reality of gun violence, and brings to light the social issues throughout the background and shots. These shots are subtle and but implicitly show how they're important as well when contrasted by the more lively actions portrayed by Donald Glover himself.        Within the video, Donald Glover explicitly shows the reality of gun violence by replaying events, one of which references the Charleston shooting. To begin, the first verse talks about entertainment media and transitions onto the first killing. To verse drastically changes to the chorus, the camera quickly averts its attention, the victim is dealt with, and the weapon qui

Social Commentary Through Music

Social Commentary Through Music 5/5/18 In this article, I will be talking about the song, "Mrs. Potatoe Head" by Melanie Martinez, an American singer, and songwriter. Within the respective video along with others display a childlike world coupled with mature themes and social commentary. Furthermore, throughout the song talks about one going through plastic surgery to live up to society's beauty expectations. For example, stating, "No one will love you if you're unattractive". As a result, pressuring the main character to alter her appearance, despite the consequences. However, the surgery distorted the main characters face and made her appear unattractive. With the main character's displeasing appearance, she ultimately regretted her decision when her suitor was disgusted by the result and left.  Overall, the childish world Melanie Martinez portrays is juxtaposed with the lyrics. Furthermore, the song references the toy, Mr. Pototatoe He

The Problem with Snapchat Filters

The Problem with Snaphat Filters 5/5/18 To begin, if your a teen, then most likely you have been on Snapchat. I myself own a Snapchat account and various times I have been through the wide selection of face filters before I take a picture. While some filters may just be for aesthetic appeal, others distort your appearance to an unnatural extent. As a result, people may use such filters as a clutch, to resolve their own insecurities, or to mask themselves. For example, some filters such as the cat filter distort your appearance to an extraordinary extent. Imperfections and acne on your skin get masked. Extra fat or a double chin gets removed. The bags under your eyes magically disappear and the overall tone of your skin gets evened out. I personally have used this filter(not because I wanted to look like a cat but because I was just testing it out) and the final result hardly resembles the actual me. Furthermore, this filter is too manipulative. It's deceptive and
