Representation of Ethnic Minorities in Media

Representation of Ethnic Minorities in Media

5/27/18

I don't watch that much entertainment media, but whenever I do, notice that most of the people portrayed on entertainment media are typical of the same ethnicity. Most of which tend to be Caucasian. Furthermore, its difficult to find movies or television shows where the protagonist is Asian, African American, or any other minority race.

To begin, I believe that minority representation within media has gradually gotten better since the last couple of years. However, it's still evident that there is an imbalance between representation. Furthermore, it is difficult to realize that your ethnicity may not be portrayed as much or is as popular as others. As a result, it is a little demotivating at the time. Although, things are getting better. For example, Black Panther. Black Panther was a great movie and I'm not going to give any spoilers for those who haven't watched it, despite it being forever since it was released. However, it was a very popular movie that featured an African American protagonist. As a result, this stood out coupled with the fact that this movie was relatively popular compared to the rest of the competition.

Overall, this movie is very inspiring to minority populations. Primarily due to the fact that a minority ethnicity can be represented in a popular movie is just amazing.

Making Cents Out of Teens

Making Cents Out of Teens 5/19/18  Upon watching PBS Frontline’s “Making Cents out of Teens,” it didn't really surprise me. I know that companies make lots of assumptions about teens, most of them beginning with, "All teens want or need this". On the other hand, I realize that companies try to project their own image of the "ideal" teenager based on focus groups and interviews. Overall, I would just be talking about the disadvantages of their advertising techniques and I am just going to give my two cents on the issue. To begin, the advertisers within the film generally made the assumption that most teens are attracted to sex, violence, and excitement. As a result, advertisers cater to their audience's needs. To the point in which products or shows become overly vulgar or fan-service orientated. This just has a chain effect as more and more products revolve around this assumption. Secondly, the entire projection of a mook or midriff seems
