The Problem with Snapchat Filters

The Problem with Snaphat Filters

5/5/18

To begin, if your a teen, then most likely you have been on Snapchat. I myself own a Snapchat account and various times I have been through the wide selection of face filters before I take a picture. While some filters may just be for aesthetic appeal, others distort your appearance to an unnatural extent. As a result, people may use such filters as a clutch, to resolve their own insecurities, or to mask themselves.

For example, some filters such as the cat filter distort your appearance to an extraordinary extent. Imperfections and acne on your skin get masked. Extra fat or a double chin gets removed. The bags under your eyes magically disappear and the overall tone of your skin gets evened out. I personally have used this filter(not because I wanted to look like a cat but because I was just testing it out) and the final result hardly resembles the actual me. Furthermore, this filter is too manipulative. It's deceptive and ultimately sets the fine line for beauty standards.

As a result, people begin to use this filter as a clutch. Primarily due to the filter's deceptive manner, people use it to distort their appearance and to ultimately make it look more "perfect". Furthermore, this causes people to conceal their unique physical characteristics and ultimately change their appearance. Overall, this filter is toxic and pollutes everything that it touches.

I believe that face filters should be just for fun. Also, I realize that must of been the initial goal, however, it's as though it strayed from the original path. Face filters are becoming too deceptive of one's appearance and ultimately sets the bar for beauty standards. Furthermore, I believe that face filters can exist, however, they have to tone down the face altering effects.

  1. I enjoyed reading this because of how new and different the content is. You pretty much summed everything up perfectly but to add, I think that these filters have become such a standard it makes the user feel insignificant without them. Sometimes it is easy to mask all your insecurities behind a filter, I find myself doing this as well. This trend makes it so we aren't content with our natural selves, something I think is very dangerous.

Childish Gambino-This is America

Childish Gambino-This is America 5/13/18       To Begin, Donald Glover an American singer, actor, and comedian comments on gun violence and other social issues within society through his new song-This is America. The song was published on May 5, 2018, and was followed by large controversy. Within the video, Donald Glover explicitly shows the reality of gun violence, and brings to light the social issues throughout the background and shots. These shots are subtle and but implicitly show how they're important as well when contrasted by the more lively actions portrayed by Donald Glover himself.        Within the video, Donald Glover explicitly shows the reality of gun violence by replaying events, one of which references the Charleston shooting. To begin, the first verse talks about entertainment media and transitions onto the first killing. To verse drastically changes to the chorus, the camera quickly averts its attention, the victim is dealt with, and the weapon qui

Making Cents Out of Teens

Making Cents Out of Teens 5/19/18  Upon watching PBS Frontline’s “Making Cents out of Teens,” it didn't really surprise me. I know that companies make lots of assumptions about teens, most of them beginning with, "All teens want or need this". On the other hand, I realize that companies try to project their own image of the "ideal" teenager based on focus groups and interviews. Overall, I would just be talking about the disadvantages of their advertising techniques and I am just going to give my two cents on the issue. To begin, the advertisers within the film generally made the assumption that most teens are attracted to sex, violence, and excitement. As a result, advertisers cater to their audience's needs. To the point in which products or shows become overly vulgar or fan-service orientated. This just has a chain effect as more and more products revolve around this assumption. Secondly, the entire projection of a mook or midriff seems
