The Persuaders
4/29/18
To begin, before watching the in-class video I didn't realize how advertisements influence us throughout the media. Furthermore, I use social media on a daily basis. As a result, I'm enveloped in advertisements; of which are tailored to my interest or needs. At first, I thought it was a coincidence, however, when advertisements seemed they were directed at me it became disturbing. For example, advertisements seemed juxtaposed. Once in a while, I would watch a math video for assistance, however, the advertisements weren't related to math but to my search history.
It was after the video when I realized how naive I was being in the past. Furthermore, I now realize that advertisers target special audience depending on their interest. As a result, I can be exposed to advertisements that can potentially interest me no matter what I do on social media. Also, I realize that I should read the terms of service whenever entering a site where personal information can be exposed; whether it be social media, youtube, surveys, etc.
Finally, the biggest part that shocked me within the video was when the advertisers try to manipulate their words to create an emotional response. Furthermore, using words with certain connotation to either silver line, mask, or make terms vaguer. For example, global warming turns into climate change or gun control to gun reform(don't quote me on that).
Another part that shocked me was how advertisers want to make a connection between the consumer and the product. Furthermore, advertisers create a sense of loyalty to their consumer. As a result, consumers become devoted to such product. Overall, I fell into this trap and I'm a person who only buys their jeans from Levis. In the end, advertisers find many ways to "persuade" consumers into buying their products.
